Vaccines: investment for life

Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective and successful of public health interventions. It has been used to tackle diseases such as rabies, diphtheria, tetanus, yellow fever and, more recently, polio, measles, mumps, and rubella and hepatitis B.

In the past, vaccination was aimed mostly at the young. Today it can be used for people of all ages with a range of vaccines available to prevent disease at all stages of life.

Victories and challenges

Vaccines have helped to bring many diseases under control. Examples are poliomyelitis, measles and smallpox.

However, many diseases are still not preventable by vaccination. Our search continues for vaccines to prevent some of the world’s most common diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and malaria.
